Rejuvenating the Windows to the Soul

Not only are your eyes considered windows to the soul, but they are also one of the first areas to show your age. The goal of rejuvenating the eye area is to restore a rested, open, and natural appearance. When considering eye area rejuvenation, both the upper and lower eyelids, as well as the eyebrows, must be comprehensively evaluated.

As part of the aging process, excess upper eyelid skin accumulates, which is often accentuated by a sagging eyebrow. Simultaneously, the aging lower eyelid develops puffy pockets of herniated fat and excess skin. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and Brow Lift (forehead lift) surgery work together to address these concerns, creating harmonious and natural results.

Blepharoplasty: Refine Your Eyelid Contours

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, is a surgical option that removes excess eyelid skin and lower eyelid bags (herniated fat) to help you achieve a refreshed, youthful look. By refining the contours of your upper and lower eyelids, this procedure creates a more alert and rejuvenated expression.

What Are Some of the Benefits of Blepharoplasty?

  • A More Youthful Look: A smoother eyelid contour and refreshed appearance gives a younger, brighter, and more vibrant look without appearing overdone.
  • Treatment for Excess Skin on the Eyelids: By removing excess skin, we create a smoother, more lifted look, helping tired, heavy eyes appear more open and refreshed.
  • Reducing Puffiness or Bags Under the Eyes: This procedure serves as an effective tired-looking eyes solution by removing or redistributing fat beneath the eyes.
  • Resolving Drooping Eyelids: Addresses sagging that can make you look older or, in severe cases, obstruct your vision.
  • Resolving Impaired Vision: Improved vision with eyelid surgery is possible for patients with sagging upper skin that blocks the upper field of vision.

Types of Blepharoplasty

Upper BlepharoplastyUpper EyelidsCorrects sagging, drooping, and skin redundancy, particularly if vision is obstructed.
Lower BlepharoplastyUnder-Eye AreaTargets puffiness and bags. Approaches include: Transconjunctival (internal) or Transcutaneous (below the lashes).

Brow Lift: Elevate and Smooth the Forehead

Brow Lift Results

What Is a Brow Lift?

A Brow Lift repositions the position and contour of the eyebrows to enhance the balance and harmony of your facial features. This procedure addresses signs of aging in the upper face to create a brighter, more youthful, and more relaxed appearance.

What Does a Brow Lift Treat?

  • Drooping Eyebrows: Gently lifts the brows to correct a tired or heavy look.
  • Horizontal Forehead Wrinkles: Helps smooth deep creases across the forehead.
  • Frown Lines Between the Brows: Minimizes scowl lines (the “11s”) between the eyebrows for a more relaxed expression.

Types of Brow Lifts

We offer several techniques tailored to your specific needs and hair pattern:
  • Temple Lift: Specifically targets and elevates the outer portion of the eyebrow.
  • Coronal & Tricophytic / Pretrichial: Incisions are placed near the hairline to lift the entire forehead and brow.
  • Mid-forehead Lift: Often used for men with receding hair lines where an incision is placed within a deep horizontal forehead wrinkle.
  • Direct Lift: Removes skin directly above the brow to raise the position.
  • Endoscopic Lift: Minimally invasive technique using small incisions hidden in the hairline.

The Blepharoplasty / Brow Lift Process

The Consultation

At your consultation, you will meet personally with Dr. Kaniff. He will discuss your concerns and thoroughly examine your eye area. If you like what you see when you manually raise your brow, you may be a candidate for brow lift surgery. If you wake up and the puffiness under the eye remains after a good night’s sleep, you are a good candidate for lower eyelid blepharoplasty.

The Procedure

  • Blepharoplasty: For the upper lids, excess skin is removed through an incision in the natural crease. For lower lids, fat herniation (bags) is removed through an incision inside the lower eyelid or a skin incision under the eyelash.
  • Brow Lift: Most incisions are hidden back in the hairline, with attention to maintaining hair. The brow is released from its attachments and artistically re-positioned in an elevated position that is natural in appearance.

Complimentary Procedures

To further improve Blepharoplasty and Brow Lift results, Dr. Kaniff may suggest:

  • Fat Transfer: Fat from a donor area is prepared and meticulously placed in areas of volume loss typically along the lower bony eye socket rim and mid-cheek areas.
  • Fat Repositioning: Herniated lower eyelid fat is re-positioned to hollow areas along the lower eyelid over the lower bony eye socket.
  • Skin Resurfacing (e.g., laser treatments): Laser resurfacing improves the skin quality around the eye and softens fine lines.
  • Deep Plane Facelift: Restoring the cheeks and jawline with a deep plane facelift is often done in conjunction to achieve a total facial rejuvenation.

What to Expect: The Recovery

  • Initial Downtime: Most people return to work and resume light activities after several days.
  • Swelling & Bruising: Typically subsides significantly within 7 to 14 days.
  • Tip: Keeping your head elevated and applying cold compresses during the first 48 hours helps reduce swelling.
  • Restrictions: No heavy bending, lifting, or straining is recommended for two weeks.
  • Visible Results: Initial improvements are seen quickly; final results settle over several weeks to months.
