A shapely and well-proportioned nose can make a face look more pleasing from any angle. But your nose doesn’t just contribute to aesthetics. It can also have an impact on your comfort and health. A nose that isn’t shaped properly on the inside can also cause problems with breathing.
At Kaniff Cosmetic Medical Center, we have helped many patients in the area with our rhinoplasty surgeries. Rhinoplasty can help patients who have cosmetic concerns about their noses. It can also help individuals who have nose injuries or breathing problems.
What Is a Rhinoplasty?
A Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves changing the shape of the nose for cosmetic or medical reasons. A variety of procedures can be done based on what the patient needs or wants. During a rhinoplasty, sometimes called a “nose job”, the surgeon may change the shape of the bone, perform surgery on the cartilage, or adjust the skin around the nose.
Before: Consultation and Planning Your Surgery
The planning process of any rhinoplasty surgery is essential. During the consultation, we can determine which method we are going to use for the surgery and talk about the results that you want to achieve from your nose job. We will either choose between a closed rhinoplasty or an open rhinoplasty.
We use advanced computer imaging technology that allows us to plan your rhinoplasty before operating. This will allow both you and your surgeon to see exactly what your nose could look like after surgery. This gives you the ability to make sure you are happy with the shape that we have chosen for your face before committing to a bulbous nose job procedure.
Closed Rhinoplasty vs Open Rhinoplasty
At our practice, we prefer using a closed rhinoplasty for most of our procedures. With a closed rhinoplasty, there are no visible incisions because everything is done inside the nose. However, in some cases, this approach can make it more difficult to see the bones and cartilage. In a smaller amount of cases, we may recommend an open rhinoplasty. This type of procedure involves making an incision from nostril to nostril so that the skin can be lifted. Scars from this type of rhinoplasty surgery are very minimal.
Do You Need Revision Rhinoplasty?
During your consultation, we will also find out whether you have had a nose job before and are looking for revision rhinoplasty. While this type of surgery is more difficult, we specialize in this type of procedure and routinely achieve excellent results.
Ethnic Rhinoplasty
Many surgeons in the past have been in the pattern of using caucasian standards of beauty when planning their rhinoplasty surgeries. At our practice, we want to preserve your heritage by planning a surgery that will take the beautiful and unique structure of your face into account. Our ethnic rhinoplasty procedures not only achieve results that can help accentuate the features of our patients who are Native American, Middle Eastern, Latino, African-American, Asian, and more, but they can also help us to prevent breathing problems or revision surgeries that can occur with doctors who offer same-size-fits-all rhinoplasties.
Asian Rhinoplasty
As with our ethnic services, Asian rhinoplasty services take your facial structure and ethnicity into account. We use specific techniques that can better address concerns that many people with Asian heritage have about their noses. Our goal is to enhance the shape of your nose and increase the beauty and symmetry of your face without sacrificing the unique ethnic features that make you, you.
During: What to Expect on the Day of Surgery
During your nose job surgery, your surgeon will either put you under local anesthesia with sedation, also known as twilight sedation or general anesthesia. We use twilight sedation for the majority of patients because of its improved safety and recovery time. Once you are under anesthesia, the incisions can be made and the surgery can begin. Depending on the surgery that you are having, your doctor may remove some of the bone using special equipment.
The cartilage may also be restructured during surgery. Cartilage can also be added in certain areas to lift the tip of the nose, resolve uneven nostrils, or reshape the nose. Procedures can also be done to improve breathing or fix a deviated septum. Once the surgery is complete, the incisions will be closed a splint will be placed to keep everything in place.
After: What to Expect From Your Recovery
The recovery process is often the part of the surgery that many of our patients worry about. We make recovery as easy as possible. At our practice, we can avoid packing the nose with gauze or cotton using our unique suturing technique. This gives you an easier recovery with less swelling and bruising and allows you to breathe post-treatment.
Your splint should remain in place for a week after surgery. At this time, you will come in for a removal of the splint and an evaluation. In the week following the removal of your splint, you should still be careful to avoid strenuous activity and bending over until the two-week point.
Swelling can continue to be present in the weeks and months following. Most of the swelling usually subsides within the first two months, but it can take up to a year for you to be able to see the final results of your rhinoplasty surgery.
